New privacy bills about suing firms, not just shielding data
California’s groundbreaking Consumer Privacy Act, passed overwhelmingly and signed into law last year, won’t go into effect until January, yet lawmakers have introduced several bills that would revise and expand its provisions. Enhancing Internet privacy is a worthy goal, but these efforts mostly are about something more nefarious: giving attorneys wider latitude to sue the state’s tech firms and small businesses that rely on online advertising.
