Master Gardener: Why you’re seeing tarantulas creeping around

Q: Why are there so many tarantulas walking around right now? 
A: Just in time for Halloween, tarantula mating season is upon us. Male tarantulas emerge from their burrows in search of females. Once the male has found a cooperative female, he will present her with an insect as a gift. He mates with her while she’s occupied with her treat. If he is lucky, he can escape while she is distracted. If he’s not lucky, she will kill and devour him as well.
