Master Gardener: How to prune avocado trees

Q: How are you supposed to prune an avocado tree right after planting? I had read somewhere that you should cut it back to 7 inches tall, but I haven’t seen this advice in more than one place.
A: After searching through my library and quite a few avocado-growing websites, I couldn’t find any advice to prune a newly-planted avocado tree to a height of 7 inches, so I’m guessing that you probably shouldn’t do that.
