Making the most of Mammoth
Skiers entering the main lodge at Mammoth Mountain are greeted by a large sculpture of a Woolly Mammoth. The assumption is one of the extinct animals was found frozen in the glacier, perhaps uncovered when resort founder Dave McCoy caught an edge on a primordial tusk back in 1953. Sadly, that’s not the case. Instead, the resort was likely named for the Mammoth Mining Company, a prominent player in the Mono County Gold Rush of the 1870s.
