Laguna Beach never left novelist Edan Lepucki

In the four years that I lived with my family in the Bay Area, I braved the beach only once. It was summer, which meant it was 60 degrees out – and foggy. The drive to Stinson Beach in Marin County was long and winding, the road down to the ocean lined with eucalyptus trees and then redwoods. My son and I split a tasty chocolate-banana milkshake at a beachside restaurant. The water was cold and gray, as was the sky. I kept my sweatshirt on and made sure the baby was bundled up.
