LA County DA warns of virtual kidnapping scams

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is warning people to watch out for virtual kidnapping scams in which a fraudster calls claiming to have kidnapped a loved one.
When the victim, often a senior, answers the phone, the scammer proclaims to be a kidnapper while screams can be heard in the background. The victim will often blurt out a relative’s name fearing that is the person screaming. The caller then confirms the name.
