Former first lady Barbara Bush was a class act: Letters

Re “Former first lady Barbara Bush dies at age 92” (April 17):
In 1992, I was a young widow with two small children. I had applied for Social Security benefits for them, and after months had nothing resolved. I was broke and desperate.
I wrote to the nation’s “grandmother” and within a week had all the back payment we were owed and a lovely condolence letter from Barbara Bush. She got things done and I will treasure her appearance in our lives always.
