Felix Peña’s thumb needs in-game repairs; Angels hope to avoid long-term problems

ANAHEIM – Angels pitcher Felix Peña ran off the mound in the middle of the second inning, in the middle of an at-bat, in the middle of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
When Peña returned a minute later, the blood flowing from his right thumb was no longer visible. He threw two more pitches to Jace Peterson and induced an inning-ending ground ball. Ultimately, the Angels were able to coax five innings out of their injured starter in a critical situation.
