Don’t give up on American idealism

As the Independence Day holiday nears, it’s bracing to contemplate how directly linked we are to the philosophical and spiritual idealism that motivated the country’s founding, and how people today view liberty and individual freedom.
True, idealism is a casualty of the times, where cynicism, hypocrisy and a thirst for political power have subordinated the sentiment. But it is not snuffed out. It won’t be snuffed out.
