‘Cabaret’ plays it a bit tame, but still effective, in La Mirada
In its day and time, “Cabaret” probably seemed daring, and maybe even shocking. It portrayed Western society (read: Western Europe and the U.S.) as decadent while reflecting the new sexual candor of the ’60s.
Later iterations and revival stagings added new elements, like having “cabaret boys” join the six girls who dance at the Kit Kat Klub (and share their blatant proclivity for promiscuity), and ramping up the menace of the coming storm of the Third Reich.
