Best thing I ate: Vietnamese-style rice porridge
Congee doesn’t get much respect.
Congee for me was an acquired taste. It’s not that it tasted weird but rather because I first came to know it as a breakfast food. In my many travels to Asia, I continually encountered this rice porridge at breakfast. And a hot, sludgy bowl of rice gruel topped with savory chicken nuggets didn’t get me excited first thing in the morning.
But then I realized it’s not just for breakfast. That’s when I fell in love with it.
