A wistful farewell to what we’ve lost
In 1994, Richard Nixon suffered a stroke while dining in his adopted New Jersey home. At 81, he was gone four days later. While running for re-election 10 years earlier, Ronald Reagan, another California Republican who made it to the White House, had affectionately described Orange County as the place “where good Republicans come home to die.”
