A president intervenes in military justice
There are conflicting versions of exactly why Navy Secretary Richard Spencer was fired, but it all revolves around one thing that shouldn’t have happened: the president’s unnecessary intervention on behalf of service members charged or convicted of war crimes.
Officially, Defense Secretary Mark Esper says he fired Spencer because his private statements about the case differed from what he had said in public. Esper claimed he was “deeply troubled by this conduct.”
