Mid-September is the right time to prune avocado and citrus trees. Start by removing all vigorous, upright-growing “water sprouts,” then cut back the top to just about any height you want – as low as 8-10 feet tall. You might sacrifice some fruit now, but beginning next year the avocado and citrus trees pruned this way in September and again in March each year actually produce several times more avocados than trees that are left unpruned.
