New Mexico officials find more than 5,000 untested rape kits

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) – New Mexico has amassed a backlog of at least 5,341 untested rape kits, according to state officials.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety surveyed police departments earlier this year and found that thousands of sexual assault evidence kits, some dating back to the 1980s, are sitting untested in police departments, reported the Albuquerque Journal.
