Troopers: Peaceful end to Seward Highway shots fired incident

A man is in custody after Alaska State Troopers say he fired shots and threatened people with a hammer and gun on the Seward Highway near Portage on Monday morning.

Troopers identified the suspect as 37-year-old Nathanial R. Smith of Anchorage.
The highway was closed starting a little before 9 a.m. for about two hours from Girdwood south to Mile 75, near the “Welcome to the Kenai Peninsula” sign.
