Japan ranks first in the World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel & Tourism Development Index, while faster gains in emerging destinations show tourism competitiveness spreading beyond established markets. At the same time, rising costs, workforce shortages and pressure on infrastructure are becoming increasingly important constraints on future growth.
