US stocks mixed in late-afternoon trading; oil up
U.S. stock indexes drifted between small gains and losses in late-afternoon trading Wednesday, on course for a mostly lower close. Investors weighed a mix of new economic data and their implications for a potential Federal Reserve rate hike. Supermarket chains and other consumer-focused companies were among the biggest decliners. Energy stocks led the gainers, aided by a pickup in crude oil prices.
