Stocks mixed in afternoon trading; GE jumps on earnings

Major U.S. stock indexes were hovering between small gains and losses in afternoon trading Friday, pulling back slightly from some of their gains earlier in the day. Investors were assessing the latest company earnings for insight into how the global economy is doing. Consumer staple stocks were among the biggest risers.
