Rights groups assail Justice Department over college race probe

Civil rights groups slammed the Trump administration on Wednesday over a U.S. Justice Department plan to probe whether colleges' racial-preference admissions programs discriminate against white and Asian-American applicants.Affirmative action programs in higher education were meant to address America's historic racial discrimination problem.The Supreme Court has ruled that universities may use affirmative action in admissions policies with the aim of helping minority applicants get into college.
