'Resilient' New Orleans can bear another Katrina: mayor

The mayor of New Orleans expressed confidence Tuesday in his city's ability to weather an equally mighty storm, a decade after it was savagely devastated by Hurricane Katrina. "The city is much safer than it was in terms of hurricane protection," Mayor Mitch Landrieu told a National Press Club luncheon in Washington. Some $14.6 billion in federal funds have gone toward reinforcing the levees that failed spectacularly when Katrina slammed into New Orleans on August 29, 2005, he said.
