'Hero' officer staged suicide, embezzled from youth program

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. (AP) — A police officer who was lauded as a hero after his fatal shooting triggered an intense and costly manhunt in fact killed himself because he was about to be exposed as a thief, and carefully staged his death to make it seem like he died in the line of duty, authorities said Wednesday.
