David C. Driskell, who died last week at 88, was a man who wore many hats—curator, scholar, teacher, collector, among them. But Driskell first got his start as an artist. At Howard University in Washington, D.C., he started out studying painting, but soon changed his major to art history, at the urging of his early mentor James A. Porter. As Driskell recalled to journalist Pamela Newkirk in the May 2000 issue of ARTnews, Porter told him, “You have to show people what we’ve
