Kirk R. Johnson was born Feb. 7, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Wendell and Rachel Johnson. He was raised in Lake City, Iowa, along with his siblings, Susan, Mark, and Brian, where he learned the bedrock principles of neighborliness and hard work.
