Rock Scully, the Grateful Dead's first manager, dies

Rock Scully , the original manager of the Grateful Dead , who helped navigate the maverick San Francisco band through the wild and woolly period between 1965 to 1985, died on Dec. 16 in his hometown of Monterey. He was 73. As a grad school dropout who had been promoting concerts for the Family Dog, Mr. Scully first encountered the band at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco in December 1965, while they were still known as the Warlocks.
