Contemporary music: It isn't as scary as you might think

I have to admit that in the past when I went to symphony concerts I used to be afraid of it, too -- the composition on the program I did not know, the piece by the suspiciously unknown or obscure composer. Maybe because I didn't know what to expect? Maybe the fear of the unknown? Creating interesting and engaging concert programs is one of the great challenges for every music director.
