Fewer asylum seekers cross border into Canada over winter

Fall and winter saw a big drop in the number of asylum seekers from the United States crossing farmers' fields and dense forests on foot to reach Canada, officials said Wednesday.The northbound wave of migrants came after US President Donald Trump announced the end of special protections for Haitians and other groups.Nearly 21,000 asylum claims were made in 2017 by border jumpers, most of whom went to Quebec province, the immigration ministry said.
