Wall St. edges higher late as sentiment data, GE boost

The stock gave the S&P 500 and Dow their biggest boosts. Consumer sentiment data also helped. The University of Michigan's preliminary index on consumer sentiment rebounded strongly in early October, suggesting that the economic recovery remained on track.
