US stock indexes inch higher in midday trading

U.S. stocks edged higher in midday trading Wednesday, rebounding from a slight dip earlier in the day. Investors had their eye on corporate earnings and deal news, as well as new government data showing retail sales in April fell short of Wall Street's expectations.
