Firefighters will be called out to patients who have had a heart attack or a stroke - in a bid to help the region's stretched ambulance service.The scheme will see on-call firefighters across the East Midlands trained to become 'emergency first responders' who can help in the most serious life-threatening situations.While paramedics will still be called out as normal, ambulance service chiefs hope the project will see patients receive quicker care as staff are being called to more and more jobs.
