We are on Standard Hill, where King Charles I tried to persuade the generally bolshy townsmen of Nottingham to join his fight against the uppity unwashed in Parliament. You can imagine a couple of cheeky onlookers in feathered caps and lace collars quietly humming the Mission Impossible theme.
Nottingham Castle is one landmark on this historic hump to the west of the city centre. Another is the old Jubilee Wing of the former City Hospital, which cared for the ailing from the late 18th century
