What an event an art exhibition used to be. In September 1894 Nottingham's great, good and guests sat down to mark one such show with a five course dinner starting with clear mock turtle soup and pureed tomato.
Diners then proceeded to a choice of roast partridge, tongue and roast capon, followed by several desserts and then cheese and salad.
Speeches were made while the courses were all washed down by – in this order – sherry, burgundy, 1880 Bollinger, brandy or whisky.
