A banned driver was shown mercy after making a desperate trip to hospital with children on board. Peter McPhail was stopped by police at the wheel of his wife's mobility car heading for the Queen's Medical Centre, where his son was receiving emergency treatment for a brain injury. After hearing of the family's medical problems, magistrates gave the 67-year-old an 18-month conditional discharge today. He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance at Nottingham Magistrates.
