In July 2006, Scotsman John Thompson Love finally got a personal word of thanks from the Royal family for his bravery during the Second World War. Back in 1945, he was at the controls of a glider during Operation Varsity, the Allied crossing of the Rhine, when he was shot down over the German town of Hamminkeln.
