Plans to upgrade the M1 near Nottingham into a smart motorway with an extra lane which have been unveiled to the public today.The plans to improve the motorway between juctions 23a to Castle Donington and 25 to Derby/Nottingham involve transforming the hard shoulder to create an extra lane.Between junctions 24 and 25, the extra lane will be open permanently while, between 23a and 24, the hard shoulder will only be used when necessary.
