Durham, on 240-4, needed only 21 to win when the third shower of the day at Chester-le-Street prompted an early tea.
Led by a career-best 66 from nightwatchman Mark Wood, they were coasting to their third win in four games on a pitch which had flattened.
On a day when nothing went right for Nottinghamshire, Wood put on 116 for the second wicket with Keaton Jennings, who made 61 before he was caught at gully off Luke Wood.
