On October 12, 1957, a new East Stand opened at the City Ground costing £40,000.It accommodated up to 2,500 fans sitting on benches and the first team to arrive after its opening were Manchester United's Busby Babes – the reigning First Division champions. Tragically it would be the team's final appearance at the City Ground before the Munich disaster in February, 1958.The Football Post report stated that an all-time record crowd of 47,654 turned out that day as Duncan Edwards turned
