Nottingham's Castle has looked over the city in one form or another since 1067.Dating back to the Middle Ages, the castle was used as a medieval fortress before it was demolished in 1649. A mansion was built by The Duke of Newcastle, but rioters took a dislike to it and subsequently set fire to it in 1831.Following that fire, the building as we see it now was erected high above the streets of Nottingham.
