AlexBritton published Coronation Street actress Anne Kirkbride dies

Anne Kirkbride, who played Dierdre Barlow in the ITV soap Coronation Street, has died after a short illness.


The actress starred in the soap since 1972 and played the wife of Ilkeston-born actor William Roache.


Famed for her husky voice and large glasses, Kirkbride took some time away from the show last year and speculation was rife as to whether she would return.


It was announced by ITV that Mrs Kirkbride has died in a Manchester hospital on Monday.
