Architect determined to tackle neglect and overcrowding in London’s housingDavid Bernstein, who has died aged 80, was one of five young assistants who worked for the architect Patrick Hodgkinson on the design of the Brunswick Centre, near St Pancras station, London. The first large-scale scheme to show that housing could be built at high densities without tower blocks, it was initially planned as luxury shops and flats; Bernstein’s task in 1966 was to adapt the flats as low-cost hous
