Today's internationally used solar calendar can be noted as the Gregorian calendar, also known as the Christian calendar which bases its years in the Ano Domini era from the birth of Jesus Christ. However, before this concept was introduced to India and the regions in the Indian subcontinent, the lunar calendars of the Vikram Samvat and the Shaka Samvat were the most widely used historical calendars for the Hindus there.
