Christmas first began in the fourth century, when church officials made the birth of Jesus a holiday. In the bible it does not mention the date of Jesus’ birth, so a time had to be chosen, with later study indicating it would have to be in the Spring, because “Why would shepherds be herding sheep in the middle of Winter?” It is speculated that the church chose this date to absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival.
