The harsh reality facing Modern Foreign languages in schools is that the prevalence of French, German and Spanish is declining significantly. Provisional data released by the Department of Education in 2018 revealed that only 46.1% of students took at least one language for GCSE, and the number of MFL candidates decreased by nearly 50,000 from 2014 to 2019.
