John Cordy Burrows is a name you might not have heard, but if you’re passing through the Old Steine you will find a statue dedicated to the man, who was elected three times as Brighton Mayor and Knighted in 1873.“King Cordy”, as he was known, played a major part in the design of the Steine Gardens, as well as being a respected surgeon and co-founder of the Royal Literary and Scientific Institution in 1871.
