LOOKING BACK: Bolton welcomes young evacuees

Bolton and the surrounding areas provided homes for hundreds of youngsters, evacuated to escape the bombing of the second world war. Our picture shows some of them arriving at Turton Station in 1939. Evacuation was a major feat and Operation Pied Piper, which began on September 1, 1939, officially relocated more than 3.5 million people.There were further waves ofevacuation from the south and east coasts in June 1940.
