Bolton's Victoria Square before the 'big shops' came

Bolton’s Victoria Square in 1954 as it was before the ideas of shopping centres were introduced. It was named after Queen Victoria in 1897 to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. As an open space, it was first used as a market, known in the early part of the 19th Century as ‘pot market’.
