While anxious to reunite with her physician husband at the 20th Maine Infantry's camp in Virginia in late winter 1863, Ann Sarah Monroe also was on a mission to collect intelligence on the conditions of Maine boys spending that winter in the Union camps. The mothers and wives and sisters back home wondered if all their hard work at shipping clothing, food, and medical supplies to the boys from Maine were to no avail, and Monroe wanted answers.
