US hits Venezuelan president with sanctions
The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated Venezuelan President Nicolas for sanctions on Monday, one day after a highly contested vote to elect an constitutional assembly.
The assembly is slated to redraft the country's constitution, a move critics have charged is meant to solidify the government's power while disempowering Venezuelans.
Maduro's assets subject to US jurisdiction are now frozen, and US citizens are prohibited from dealing with him.
