Britain’s blue-chip share index has soared to a new all-time closing high powered by soaring confidence in the US, a surge in the share prices of mining companies and the impact of the falling pound.On the first day’s trading after the Christmas break the FTSE 100 index of the biggest listed companies in London jumped by 37 points, or 0.5%, to close at 7,106.08
