BBC Closes iPlayer Licence Fee Loophole

Users of the BBC's iPlayer service risk prosecution and a £1,000 fine if they watch programmes without a TV licence from today. Previously, a loophole meant only live TV was covered by the £145.50-a-year licence fee - allowing people who had missed BBC shows to watch for free on a mobile, tablet or catch-up service. Now viewers are asked to confirm they have a TV licence before watching any content on iPlayer, although they are not asked to provide details.
